Photographer Spotlight: Duane Michals
Duane Michals is an American fine art photographer noted for his metaphysical imagery and for his “creative extension of the possibilities of the photographic medium.” His works are often times best understood (intentionally) by our unconscious mind, where we are able to relate and comprehend on a more emotional level. His Madame Schrödinger’s Cat photos are some of my all time favorites (first images after the jump, but you’ll have to be aware of Schrödinger’s thought experiment to truly appreciate it). These traits are what have made Michals one of the greatest photographers of this century, and why he has endured as one of my all time favorites. Gallery of select images after the jump.
“When people ask me what I am, I tell them I’m the artist formally known as a photographer,” … “I am an expressionist and by that I mean I’m not a photographer or a writer or a painter or a tap dancer, but rather someone who expresses himself according to his needs.” – Duane Michals
